Our History
In 1987, a group of concerned citizens formed the Tuolumne County AIDS Task Force. They incorporated as Sierra AIDS Council, a private nonprofit organization based in Sonora, CA, in 1990. Services were eventually expanded to include Amador, Calaveras, and Tuolumne counties and the office was moved to Angels Camp in 1997.
In 2005, the name Sierra HOPE was adopted to reflect our updated mission in addressing other needs in our community, food insecurity and housing/utility assistance, in addition to HIV/AIDS. Our name change represents our philosophy of inspiring hope and making a difference in people’s lives by helping them meet their basic needs. In 2022, our services expanded to include Alpine, Mono and Inyo counties. In the fall of 2025, to further meet the ever-growing needs of our community, we moved our office to Main Street and for the first time separated the food pantry to be its own space. Once in a 10x15 closet, it now occupies 900 square feet located adjacent to the office and Community Resource Center in the Alta Village business complex. Sierra HOPE’s organizational capacity continues to grow to keep up with the increasing need for services, while retaining our identity as a grass roots organization.
